5 Great Tips to Get Rid of Emergency Toothache

Are you suffering from severe pain in one of your teeth? If so, you should see a dentist immediately, to find out the exact cause of your problem. There are several at-home remedies to help relieve symptoms and eliminate toothache. Read on to learn 5 helpful tips to reduce emergency tooth pain.

Causes of toothache

When you are having a toothache, you may experience pain around your jaws and teeth. It can occur due to various things such as – tooth decay, tooth infection, receding gums as well as a few other things.  When the pain persists for more than a couple of days, you need to see a dentist right away and get it treated quickly. Until then, make sure you follow these easy remedies to get rid of emergency toothache at home.

5 Tips to eliminate emergency toothache

Cold therapy – Cold therapy works really well when the pain occurs due to some form of injury or swollen gums. You can use an ice pack or cold compress to help ease the pain. Hold the cold object or ice pack on the outside of your cheek closest to the source of the pain and rotate it on and off for a few minutes. With cold therapy, the blood vessels constrict and slow down blood flow to your affected area. This can reduce the inflammation in your painful area.

Cloves – You can take a clove, put it in your mouth, and  hold it on the affected area. The pain should be reduced within a few minutes. Cloves work really well as they consist of a chemical compound known as eugenol which is anti-inflammatory and has natural pain reducing properties. You may either use cloves or clove oil which is very strong meaning only one or two drops will be sufficient. You can make clove oil by mixing ground cloves, water and olive oil forming a paste-type substance.

Garlic – Garlic consists of a powerful compound known as allicin which has anti-bacterial properties. It can be used for a long time due to medicinal purposes. The garlic should be crushed and mixed with salt before being applied to the problem area.

Saltwater Rinse – You can ease the tooth pain by rinsing your mouth with warm salty water. Salty water can loosen up the particles that get stuck in between your teeth and help with reducing swelling and inflammation. Take ½ teaspoon of salt with a cup of water and swish this mixture around your mouth for almost 30 seconds. Make sure you spit it out and repeat the process as many times as you require. This can be done up to 3 times a day.

Peppermint tea – Peppermint can also help to find relief from severe toothache. It contains a compound known as menthol which has antibacterial properties and provides a soothing minty flavour. Peppermint tea can be bought from the majority of supermarkets. Using the peppermint tea bag (once cooled) by holding it on the painful area can also help reduce symptoms of toothache. A few peppermint oil drops on cotton ball against your affected tooth is another solution.

When you need to visit a dentist for emergency toothache relief

These remedies can provide you with quick, yet temporary relief and are not a permanent solution for your toothache. There are times when a toothache can be a sign of a larger problem that requires professional assistance. If your toothache lasts for more than one or two days, it is advisable to seek treatment from a dentist.

If you do not treat the pain immediately, this might cause serious problems such as gum disease or the need for a root canal. It is possible to prevent toothaches and mouth infections by following and maintaining good dental hygiene habits.

You may do this by taking these following steps:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for at least 2 minutes
  • Floss daily and clean in between the teeth
  • Maintain routine dental check-ups every six months
  • Reduce the intake of sugary foods and drinks
  • Say no to cigarettes which cause harm to your oral health

These steps on emergency toothache relief can help you to avoid toothaches and infections for your brighter and healthy smile.
